Understanding Individual Counselling

Individual counselling is a form of mental health treatment where a registered counsellor works one-on-one with a client to address their specific therapeutic needs and goals. Therapy is tailored to your unique concerns, whether emotional, cognitive, or behavioural. I use a variety of psychotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy techniques to achieve this goal.

You may be wondering whether individual therapy is the right choice for you. For example, when people are having problems with their relationships, they may be unsure whether individual or couples counselling will be the most helpful. While both are of value, it is important to understand the differences. Couples counselling focuses more on coaching both partners in ways to improve their communication and empathy. Individual counselling allows time for me to concentrate exclusively on you, facilitating a deeper and more effective therapeutic process to help you understand your own behaviours, feelings and thoughts in relation to your partner and others. From this deeper understanding of your own psychology comes greater awareness of your role in relationships, and this can help you make the right relationship decisions to find the life you truly want.

Beyond relationship problems, individual therapy can cater to a wide range of issues, from managing anxiety and depression to addressing trauma, chronic pain, and much more. The sessions are customized based on the your symptoms and concerns, ensuring that the therapeutic process aligns perfectly with your needs. This level of personalization makes individual counselling an invaluable resource for mental and emotional well-being. By developing a sense of self-awareness and learning tools for managing your responses to stressful situations, you can take control of your life.

Breaking Free from the Past: Understanding the “Life Script” That Shapes Our Present

Many situations are upsetting and sometimes out of our control. Our past experiences, both fulfilling and traumatic, shape our inner world and shape how we see and experience the outer world. We all repeat patterns of behaviour, usually stemming from the past. In childhood, we unconsciously created a “Life Script” which helped us manage, cope and sometimes survive as a child. This Script was created under pressures where we had no control or choice and served us well as a child but, in most cases, doesn’t serve us in the present day.

For example, my childhood was affected by my parents fighting, divorcing, and moving to a new country. They were preoccupied with these things and had little time or attention for me. So, I turned to music and my dog for comfort and I displayed a behaviour of being emotionally strong and quiet. It seemed to others that I didn’t need anyone but, really, I was confused, lonely, sad, and this affected my self-esteem. It wasn’t until I was in my mid-twenties that I was able to admit to myself and my therapist at the time what I had been feeling all those years ago. In doing so, and in feeling safe within the therapy relationship, I was able to grieve for the loss of a secure family, and perhaps more significantly, I was able to start to break the unconscious pattern of failed relationships. Now I’m in a loving and emotionally supportive marriage and, of course, we have a dog.
